HIKING:

CIGNANA LAKE AND BARMASSE REFUGE (2169) - Technical Rating: E

Agoust 2003 update

INFO: Not very long hike in Valtournanche, leading up to the lake of Cignana where stands the Barmasse Refuge, stopping place of "altavia" no.1. This trail can be hiked from June to November.

APPROACH: From A5 motorway, exit at Chatillon, turn left and follow signposts to Valtournanche. Just at the beginning of the village, there is a chemist's shop on the left: in front of the shop, turn right and park the car. On friday morning (in winter) an open-air market is held in this square.

TRAIL:
From the car park cross the street to the chemist's shop; walk uphill for a few meters where a narrow road leads off to the left. Take this road walking downhill; turn left on the path leading to the road below. Walk uphill towards right: cross the bridge and continue to reach a fork. Turn right, continue past a building placed under a rocky roof, up to a wide stretch. Here you will find the signposts of the "altavia no.1": hike the path between houses reaching a wood (40min. from the car park). The wide and clear path climbs up, arriving to the buildings of the hydroelectric generating station of Promoron (1 hour from the car park). Here you could find some wire ropes barring the way: pass beyond them. The slope becomes steeper, it cross over the railway line and arrives to Falegnon, a level ground where there are some stone houses now deserted (1912 m. - 1h 30m). The path (still enough wide), follows the ridgeline overlooking the Cignana stream and runs north (ignore the left fork, that leads to the Cortina Lake - trail 3c) up to a terrace covered with alder bushes. The last stretch is a steep and harder slope, even if short, that leads on the dam wall. Continue on the dam wall towards left to reach briefly the refuge (2169m. - 2h 10m); or veer right and follow the path along the north-east side of the lake to reach the Cignana's Chapel.

You can reach Finestra di Cignana also from the other mountainside by the described hike to Monte Pancherot.
